Pure mulberry silk lace weight yarn
Made from mulberry silk, this pure silk 3ply knitting yarn is fine and delicate with a beautiful sheen and drape. I have been sharing this yarn with customers for more than 10 years and it remains one of my most popular bases and it is exclusive to me. I will dye it to order in any colour you choose - it works equally well in semi-solids as it does in variegated. It can be used for a multitude of projects and at 500m per skein, one is usually enough for most projects.
You can choose from previous colour(s) from my Colour Gallery, but I would also recommend booking a Bespoke Yarn Consultation where we can discuss your project plan in greater detail and together we can design the perfect yarn for you. If you know what colour you would like please leave me a note at checkout, or you can message me via WhatsApp. In any case I will double check with you before I begin dyeing the yarn.
A few things to bear in mind when using hand dyed yarn:
- No two skeins are ever the same, even if they have been dyed in the same pot. If you opt for variegated or speckled and consistency is important and/or to prevent colour pooling I strongly recommend you knit with two skeins and alternate every other row, particularly on larger projects. If you only have one skein, then you can use both ends at once.
- Whilst every effort has been taken to ensure colour-fastness, there is a chance that some residual dye may remain (this is normal - think jeans...) I suggest hand washing all garments in cool water prior to being worn and keep bright colours separate. I also advise against soaking your finished item as the colours can bleed.
- It is not possible to work directly from a skein/hank. It must be wound into a ball before use, or will get into a terrible tangle. For more information on how to do this there are hundreds of videos on YouTube. Alternatively for a small fee I can do it for you here.

The yarn is super to knit. It does not overtwist – sometimes a problem, and it doesn’t split. Silk doesn’t have “memory” like wool, but neither does it felt, so dropped stitches are easy to pick up, and it slides along the needles easily. In the skein there were a couple of knots, which I untied as we were winding it into balls, so I am confident to start each row without fear of finding a join half way through – so far this is just the one piece – no joins, no trailing ends except the cast on tail. Each section of the skein is wound on to two pieces of kitchen towel as you can see in the pic, but it did take an hour-and-a-half for the two of us. Silk is not hygroscopic, so it does not pick up the dirt while I am working, and I am managing a row in about 5 minutes. I love the relief created in the texture which should remain, even when the work is blocked. All-in-all fanstastic. If anyone else asks you, tell them from me!
