of my loyal customers contacted me recently to say that she had run out QSL whilst making a project that only needed 600m of silk. I was very surprised and thought that perhaps her skein must have been underweight, or perhaps her tension was very loose and she was using more yarn than the pattern stated.

Until this point I have always just trusted the information given to me by the manufacturers as I had no reason not to and no-one had ever complained before. However, it did not sit comfortably with me because a) it is one of my best selling products, and b) because I have only used it to create my own patterns and have not used it to follow any existing patterns, I had no idea how much yarn I had used.

So, how to work it out… 800m is quite a long way and obviously it was not possible to measure the whole skein. I therefore purchased some electronic scales, accurate to 0.1g. I carefully measured out 8m, and weighed it, expecting it to be around 1g. Unfortunately I was very disappointed to realised that it was 1.8g and as such the skein is more likely to be 500m than 800.

What to do next… I contacted the manufacturers and explained my predicament, and most importantly, that I have been mis-selling this product for over a year. They have been helpful but are not really accepting any liability. However, after much consideration, I decided to email all customers who have purchased this yarn and a) warn them incase they haven’t yet used it and b) offer them a gesture of compensation – £5. I wish it could be more, but this is my most popular product and any more could seriously damage my company. My biggest fear is that people will want to return the yarn – if more than a handful want cash refunds it doesn’t bear thinking about.

Anyway, I have done what I can. Personally I have 2 projects with this yarn that I can’t now complete so I feel their frustration. Time will tell…
